What is Ambient Computing?
Ambient computing describes ubiquitous or pervasive computing experiences in which human real-world interaction with technology and devices becomes largely invisible, only coming to the fore when needed.
The billions of devices deployed worldwide still have a role processing ambient computing workloads and then delivering ambient experiences, but people do not need to continuously interact with them. This is because unlike desktop computing, for instance, ambient computing provides ambient experiences that are automatic, proactive, and context-aware based on the needs and preferences of the user and the different environments they find themselves in. For the user, this delivers seamless computing and highly personalized technology experiences that “just happen” as they go about their daily lives without the need to press a touchscreen or button.
From a technology perspective, enabling these seamless computing experiences brings together services, data, and ambient intelligence through the acceleration of pervasive AI-based technologies. This is especially relevant for IoT and consumer technology markets that consist of billions of sensors and devices worldwide. The AI-based technologies in these ambient compute systems collate and interpret data and then implement seamless computing experiences that are relevant to people and their environments.
