XR experiences and devices, such as virtual reality (VR) headsets and augmented reality (AR) smartglasses, are at a tipping point for growth and widespread consumer adoption. Many companies believe this is an area that will demand significant focus and effort in the next five years. XR is predicted to play a vital role in defining future immersive experiences, particularly gaming, across all consumer devices in the next five years.
However, respondents did indicate that XR wearable devices need more “must-have” applications to fulfill the technology’s true potential. This was seen as more of a barrier to user adoption than any physical reactions to the devices or hardware, including nausea from the XR experience or headsets, which were previously considered to be the main challenges with the technology’s adoption.
Beyond the actual device experience, respondents also point toward infrastructure as a significant technological barrier to XR adoption, with 5G and cloud infrastructure investments still needed. Here’s what the survey revealed:
XR the Most In-Demand Technology
73 percent predict that AR and VR and the metaverse will demand most focus from their company in the next five years.
XR in Gaming
61 percent predict that the greater integration of AR and VR will have the most impact on gaming over the next five years.
71 percent predict that game creators will dedicate most of their efforts to games based on AR, VR, and mixed reality (MR) in the next five years.
XR Technology Challenges
47 percent believe that the lack of “must-have” applications is the biggest barrier to user acceptance of AR and VR technologies.
