The Architecture and Technology Group (ATG) provides technical direction for Arm, Arm partners, and the broader semiconductor industry in a collaborative way. We model and develop technologies that will be used in new products and markets, and maintain Arm’s leadership in energy-efficient computing. ATG works closely with all groups within Arm and with our partners. Our work touches on many aspects of computing. For example:

CPU and system architecture development and deployment.
Development of standards that allow software to run on Arm seamlessly and securely.
Software tools to support architecture development and publication.

About You

You have an interest in computer architecture, curiosity for current and future trends in computing, and are willing to work with new technologies and frameworks. As we use a very diverse range of development tools, we do not have any specific technical requirements, however, familiarity with a scripting language, such as Python, is helpful in all roles. We provide training for any new tools and languages you might need.

What Could You be Doing in this Role?

Interns work at the interface of software and hardware, developing, prototyping, and writing Arm’s architectural specifications. There are opportunities spanning topics such as security, data standards, and system integration and verification.

The Architecture Information Group (AIG) develops and releases specifications and software to enable the publication and maintenance of Arm’s reference manuals and machine-readable specifications. Software engineers will work on tools that allow the architecture to be represented and consumed consistently from machine-readable specifications, manuals, and reference models.

The CPU group develops and delivers all Arm CPU IP, from the applications processor in your phone to the real-time processor in your car and the microcontroller in every electronic gadget around you. We are a multidisciplinary group with several projects running in parallel, each requiring hardware and software engineers with a variety of skillsets working closely together to produce groundbreaking CPU products:

Hardware – design: Build early prototypes, design micro-architecture, develop RTL using HDL languages (SystemVerilog) and scripting, and optimize power, performance, area, frequency (PPAF).
Hardware – verification: Design and develop environments and test benches to verify architecture functionality and take the design to tape-out quality. Use one or more techniques (e.g. simulation/formal, pseudo-random/directed), & programming and scripting knowledge (e.g. SystemVerilog, C++, Python, assembly).
Hardware – physical implementation: Develop flows to turn IP into actual chips using scripting languages (e.g. Tcl/Python) and EDA tools (e.g. Cadence/Synopsys), to enable RTL optimization and power, performance, area (PPA) benchmarking.
Software – performance exploration & verification: Design and develop C++ software models of new generation CPUs to explore the design space and identify novel opportunities to improve CPU performance through micro-architectural enhancements. Interact with stakeholders to analyze CPU bottlenecks and to discuss, propose and explore ideas that improve the micro-architecture. Further, using industry-standard benchmarks, ensure that new CPU designs meet the expected performance requirements.
Software – system validation on operating systems (SVOS): Low-level software and CPU platform development and debug. Join us if you want to work at the software/hardware interface, learn more about how CPUs and operating systems work, like to develop C/Python tools that test CPUs by generating random instruction sequences, or you're interested in the hardware platforms used for system-level validation of functionality and performance, whether on simulation, emulation, or FPGA.

The Central Technology Group delivers technology leadership by identifying and developing a sustainable pipeline of innovative technology to create faster, smaller, better products, every year.

About You

Candidates from either mathematics, physics, or theoretical physics particularly suit our teams, however we welcome applications from any relevant degree in computer science, math, science, electronics, or engineering. We would ideally like to see candidates with some knowledge of Python.

In addition, a genuine interest and exposure to statistical math, probability modeling and algorithms would all be an advantage for hardware roles within CT.

We are also looking for candidates who want to innovate, make a high impact, are curious, and like to collaborate.

Interns in CT work to shape Arm's future technology strategy. You have the opportunity to make a big difference creating the world’s best products. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

(Part 1)

Arm GPU is an exciting division, solving the tough task of bringing triple-A games with triple-A features to mobile. Making our GPUs - massively parallel systems with up to 24 cores - fit into a small chip within a mobile phone, while being powerful enough to run AAA games and heavy compute workloads, and also efficient enough to deliver good battery life, is a unique challenge.

Unlike our many CPUs, our GPU architecture is not public. This enables us to make big changes with each new GPU variant, deliver the latest graphics and compute technologies (such as VR/AR, AI, and raytracing), and continuously innovate with significant performance and efficiency improvements.

The GPU team works on the Implementation and verification of high-performance, low-power GPUs to drive an ever-growing range of embedded devices. This is a vast and exciting challenge.

The GPU group has many sub-teams:

Unit-level teams build and verify GPU unit blocks.
Top-level team verifies the whole GPU at top-level.
Emulation team provides a platform to analyze GPU performance.
Methodology and infrastructure teams develop scripts and tools used for implementing and debugging the GPU.
Formal methodology team helps verification engineers verify the GPU blocks faster and find bugs earlier.

All the sub-teams are exposed to a wide range of tools (Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor), languages (System Verilog, Python, C, Scala), and methodologies (UVM) as part of their work. You are supported as you get up to speed with these technologies.

This is an opportunity where you get to work on next-generation GPU development, where the main aim is to build an unbreakable GPU as a designer or break the GPU in as many creative ways as you can possibly think of as a verification engineer.

We are the part of Arm that helps other parts of the business maximize engineering productivity. We do this by centralizing Arm’s common tools, methodologies, and services in a secure, intuitive, and continuously improving engineering experience.

We deliver an improved engineering experience in equal partnership with the rest of engineering. We work to try and minimize the complexity of IP and improve quality, cost, and time to market. We help Arm to be more agile in response to customers and standardize efficiency and customer ease of use.

We are looking to help increase the use of Arm technology, e.g. EDA, compute, and cloud, so that it is scalable and flexible. We enable hardware accelerated verification of Arm IP on emulation and FPGA.

About You

We are looking for candidates with a very real enthusiasm for discovery and development of ideas. We are interested to hear about what you do outside of your university studies and your wider interests in engineering.

PE covers a broad range of engineering disciplines. Software- and hardware-focused individuals would find a home here. Examples of the kind of experience, knowledge, and interests that are valuable to us:

Arm’s technology offering has moved from CPUs to whole system on chip (SoC) solutions, and the portfolio of IP that sits around the CPU is being constantly updated to meet the demanding and diverse expectations of our partners who are building everything from IoT gadgets, through to mobile devices and autonomous cars and high-performance servers, all based around the ever advancing Arm architecture.

Systems IP is everything that sits around the CPUs and is often the differentiating factor for our customers to provide fully optimized and high-performing SoC solutions.

Image signal processor (ISP) is a fundamental component for enabling next-generation computer vision-based AI and visual sensing devices. It uses state-of-the-art image and video processing algorithms implemented in hardware and software to correct and enhance the pixel data coming from image sensors. This greatly improves the camera viewing experience on devices such as mobile phones, security cameras, and drones, as well as improving the performance of computer vision-based CNNs in self-driving cars, smart cameras, and so on.

Arm System Memory Management Unit (SMMU) enables virtualization of everything that isn’t a CPU and becomes more important with every generation of computing platforms. It is a key component of the Arm architecture and implements one of the most significant algorithms in modern computing systems: address translation and memory protection. The SMMU team is developing next-generation Arm SMMU implementations targeting high-end mobile, networking, automotive, and enterprise markets.

Interconnects provide the communication backbone around the SoC that enable all the various constituent parts of the SoC to communicate with each other and the external world. A new interconnect and path to memory IP is being developed in the system IP group, conceived to bring innovative enhancements in performance for our mobile product lines.

Arm Generic Interrupt Controllers (GIC) are key for modern SoCs where there is a need for high-rate event routing and prioritization both on and between chips. As an Arm architecture component, GIC is used to achieve this across many demanding markets. The GIC team is implementing next-generation products, while helping to shape the architecture to enable the future of large virtual systems.

Arm CoreSight Debug and Trace fulfills the need for Arm-based chips to have built-in debug capability. The features our partners expect from CoreSight get more sophisticated with each generation. CoreSight hardware enables on-chip live system debugging and execution tracing for system tuning and application debug. The bandwidth requirements from tracing the execution of high numbers of CPU cores on chip mean that our CoreSight team is always looking for innovations in this essential space.

Verification IP offers critical tooling that enables the IP development teams to verify that their designs comply with Arm’s interface protocol standards, thereby ensuring that when the constituent parts of the system are put together, they interact correctly.

Implementation: Broadly, implementation is the process of translating a logical design into a physical circuit manufactured on a silicon process.

All Arm System IP is being developed for manufacture in the most advanced process nodes, to match the demands of the latest mobile, automotive and server markets. Design and implementation engineers work closely to implement and verify that system IP can meet the power, performance and area targets specified for the product.

Interns are invited to work alongside project engineers on real project delivery tasks, so you gain insights into exactly how our world class System IP is designed, verified, and delivered. Activities might include helping teams with delivery of design and verification of products or improving and implementing new workflows.

Solutions Engineering

(Part 1)

The Solutions Engineering team builds compute systems integrating many Arm IP, including CPU, GPU, NPU, and system IP, targeting different market domains ranging from mobile phones, IoT devices, and datacenters, to autonomous driving.

The team is responsible for micro-architecting the system based on requirements and creating the system RTL with all IP integrated, ensuring it is high performant and meets the area and power targets. We perform robust system verification to help ensure it functions as expected and meets the quality standard expected.

These systems are delivered to external and internal partners through multiple modes:

Reference system which is aimed at demonstrating how best to integrate ARM IPs and provide guidance to customers to make their own SoCs.

Subsystem Products which are fully verified systems that customers use within their end products.

Development Platforms which are aimed to showcase the latest Arm technology and enable software development for new technologies.

Solutions also contain FPGA and board sub-teams responsible for creating FPGA images of the subsystem and performing the bringing up and testing of Arm development platforms.

What Could You be Doing in this Role?

Interns/grads in these teams take on a variety of different tasks to help teams achieve their milestones. These often involve improving and implementing new workflows, investigating process improvements, helping teams with design and verification, and many other tasks that contribute to the success of these projects.

As an intern/graduate you have the opportunity to work on projects using a variety of programming languages and data formats, including System Verilog and Verilog for RTL development, Python for scripting, YAML, and JSON for data storage, which vary across the different projects. You also get opportunities to develop physical hardware development platforms, based around Arm's custom system-on-chip (SoC) and FPGAs.

In all teams, you are given on-the-job training where required to fulfill any tasks you are given.

Central Engineering - Machine Learning

Roles: Intern

Length of Internship: 3 months (6, and 12 months placements subject to approval)

The Arm Machine Learning (ML) group is part of Central Engineering (CE-ML) and includes teams working on a varied range of topics: from driver development for specialized ML hardware, to fostering the ML ecosystem, to open source contributions for Arm products such as Arm Kleidi AI and Arm Compute Library (ACL), to analyzing ML performance on Arm IP, and more.

We also contribute to community projects, such as PyTorch and TensorFlow. Most of the software developed in CE-ML is released as open source.

About You

The ideal candidate has an interest in ML and is keen to learn more about the cutting edge of technology in hardware, as well as software optimization for ML and AI. As most of the teams do not directly develop ML models, ML knowledge is not a requirement. We would instead appreciate an interest or knowledge in lower-level languages where memory management is important, such as C/C++. Requirements vary, depending on the team.

ML candidates can expect to learn about deploying ML workloads across a range of Arm technology including CPUs, GPUs and accelerators. Our teams write a broad spectrum of software, from low-level drivers to graph compilers, high-level ML frameworks, and application code.
